Jari Silomäki graduated from the Turku Arts Academy with a BA in Photography in 2001 and from the University of Art and Design Helsinki with an MA in 2007.

His photographic practice is situated within the field of narrative documentary, while simultaneously employing critical strategies associated with the post-documentary framework. These include the reinterpretation of situations, the highlighting of photography’s contextual dimension, and the emphasis on subjectivity. A central and recurring theme throughout his work is the relationship between individuals and the broader historical narratives they both inhabit and construct. The societal sphere consistently provides the point of departure for his imagery.

Since 1997, Silomäki has participated in numerous exhibitions, among the most significant being: MoMa PS1, New York; MCA, Sydney; D Museum, Seoul; and the large-scale solo exhibition Atlas of Emotions at the Finnish Museum of Photography.
