Jari Silomäki graduated from the Turku Arts Academy with a BA in Photography in 2001 and from the University of Art and Design Helsinki with an MA in Photography in 2007.
His photographic practice is situated within the field of narrative documentary, while also employing critical strategies of post-documentary photography. These include the reinterpretation of situations, an emphasis on photography’s contextual dimension, and a focus on subjectivity. A central and recurring concern throughout his work is the relationship between individuals and the broader historical narratives they both inhabit and help to construct. The social sphere consistently provides the point of departure for his imagery.
Since 1997, Silomäki has participated in numerous exhibitions, among the most significant of which are MoMA PS1, New York; MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art), Sydney; D Museum, Seoul; and the recent major retrospective, Atlas of Emotions, at the Finnish Museum of Photography.
